What is PAD?

Peripheral Arterial Disease is a condition that is caused by an accumulation of fatty deposits in the arteries of the legs, arms, and other extremities. This buildup, known as plaque, can cause the arteries to narrow, leading to a decrease in blood flow.

This decrease in blood flow can cause pain, numbness, and weakness in the legs and other extremities. PAD may also be caused by diabetes, smoking, age, a sedentary lifestyle, obesity, and other factors.

Who Is at Risk for PAD?

Anyone can develop PAD, but certain factors can increase your risk. People with diabetes, smokers, and those who are over the age of 50 are more likely to develop PAD. Additionally, people who are obese, lead a sedentary lifestyle, or have a family history of PAD may be at an increased risk for developing the condition.

How Is PAD Treated?

Treatment for PAD depends on the severity of the condition and can range from lifestyle changes to surgery. Lifestyle changes such as quitting smoking, exercising regularly, and eating a healthy diet can help improve symptoms of PAD. Additionally, medications such as blood thinners and cholesterol-lowering drugs are often used to treat PAD, but may not provide sufficient relief. For more severe cases, surgery may be required to open blocked arteries.
