Brown, is committed to delivering compassionate, personalized care to each of our patients. Let’s explore what sclerotherapy is, why it is recommended, its benefits, and what you can expect from the procedure.

What is Sclerotherapy?

Sclerotherapy is a medical procedure used to treat varicose veins and spider veins. During the procedure, a solution called a sclerosant is injected directly into the affected veins. This solution irritates the lining of the blood vessels, causing them to collapse and stick together. Over time, the treated veins are absorbed by the body and fade away, improving the appearance of the skin and alleviating symptoms associated with varicose veins.

As a vascular specialist, Dr. Don Brown uses the latest techniques and technology to ensure the highest level of care during sclerotherapy. This treatment is typically performed in our office and does not require anesthesia. It is a safe and effective option for many patients seeking relief from the discomfort and cosmetic concerns associated with varicose veins.

Reasons for Sclerotherapy

There are several reasons why a patient might be recommended sclerotherapy. Varicose veins and spider veins can cause a range of symptoms, including pain, swelling, aching, and a heavy feeling in the legs. In more severe cases, these veins can lead to complications such as skin changes, ulcers, and blood clots.

Patients often seek sclerotherapy for both medical and cosmetic reasons. Medically, treating varicose veins can alleviate the discomfort and potential complications associated with them. Cosmetically, sclerotherapy can improve the appearance of the legs by reducing the visibility of unsightly veins.

The Benefits of Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy offers numerous benefits for patients suffering from varicose veins and spider veins. Some of the key benefits include:

  • Minimally Invasive: Sclerotherapy is a minimally invasive procedure that involves only small injections, eliminating the need for surgery.

  • Quick Recovery: Patients can typically resume normal activities immediately after the procedure, with minimal downtime.

  • Effective Results: Sclerotherapy is highly effective in reducing the appearance of varicose veins and spider veins, with many patients experiencing significant improvement after just one treatment session.

  • Long-Lasting Relief: The treated veins are permanently sealed off and gradually absorbed by the body, providing long-lasting relief from symptoms and improved cosmetic appearance.

  • Safety: When performed by a skilled vascular specialist like Dr. Don Brown, sclerotherapy is a safe procedure with a low risk of complications.

What to Expect

If you are considering sclerotherapy, it is important to know what to expect before, during, and after the procedure.

Before the Procedure:

During your initial consultation, Dr. Don Brown will evaluate your veins and discuss your medical history. He will explain the sclerotherapy procedure, address any concerns you may have, and determine if you are a good candidate for the treatment.

During the Procedure:

The sclerotherapy procedure is typically performed in our office and takes about 15 to 30 minutes, depending on the size of the affected area. You will be asked to lie down with your legs slightly elevated. Using a fine needle, Dr. Brown will inject the sclerosant solution into the targeted veins. You may experience a mild stinging or burning sensation during the injection, but this is usually brief and well-tolerated.

After the Procedure:

After sclerotherapy, you will be able to get up and walk around immediately. Walking is encouraged to promote healthy blood flow and reduce the risk of complications. Mild side effects such as bruising, swelling, or redness at the injection sites are common but typically resolve within a few days.
