What is Sclerotherapy?
At Southern Kentucky Vascular, we recognize that how you look can also affect how you feel. Sclerotherapy can help you look and feel better.
This safe and effective procedure is performed in our office. A solution is injected into the affected spider veins or smaller varicose veins, causing a scarring reaction inside the vein. Blood then redirects to other veins as the treated vein collapses and fades over the next few days or weeks. Fading can take a few weeks, and may require additional sclerotherapy treatments to achieve the desired result.
Sclerotherapy is usually done for cosmetic purposes, to make legs look better. However, this procedure can also improve symptoms associated with varicose veins:
- Swelling
- Aching
- Burning Sensation
- Cramping at Night
What to Expect from Sclerotherapy
Most people can plan to return to their regular activities on the same day, as the procedure, but it is helpful to have someone drive you home and take it easy, avoiding exercise over the next two weeks following Sclerotherapy.
Soon after the procedure, our team will encourage you to get up and walk around. This is important to prevent potential blood clots from forming.
Once home, you'll be instructed to wear compression socks or bandages to help keep pressure on the treated veins. Treated areas should avoid sun during this time, or be sure to use sunscreen with at least 30 SPF to avoided creating pigmented spots from sun exposure.
